When the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus smartphones were announced on September 9th, there was speculation that the devices would have smaller battery capacities. But at the iPhone 6s announcement event, Apple specifically did not talk about battery capacities.

Shortly after the new iPhone announcement, it was discovered that a video rendering played during the event revealed the battery capacity of the iPhone 6s is 1715 mAh (milliampere hour) — which is actually lower than the 1810 mAh battery capacity of the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6s Plus battery capacity was unknown up until recently. Apple.Club.TW, an Apple-focused website in China, received a photo of the internal iPhone 6s Plus components — which was subsequently posted on 9to5Mac.

The photo reveals that the battery capacity of the iPhone 6s Plus is 2750 mAh. That battery capacity is about 5%-6% lower than the 2915 mAh battery in the iPhone 6 Plus. The battery capacity reduction percentage in the iPhone 6s Plus against the iPhone 6 Plus is about the same as the iPhone 6s against the iPhone 6.

Why did Apple lower the battery capacities in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus? To prevent the size of the newer iPhones from increasing, a sacrifice had to be made in order to make room for the 3D Touch sensors and the Taptic Engine. However, the battery life of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has remained the same as its predecessors despite the lower battery capacities. Here is a battery life comparison between all of the phones:

iPhone 6:

- 1810 mAh battery capacity
- Talk time: Up to 14 hours on 3G
- Internet use: Up to 10 hours on 3G, up to 10 hours on LTE, up to 11 hours on Wi-Fi
- HD video playback: Up to 11 hours
- Audio playback: Up to 50 hours
- Standby time: Up to 10 days

iPhone 6s:
- 1715 mAh battery capacity (based on Apple’s iPhone 6S videorender)
- Talk time: Up to 14 hours on 3G
- Internet use: Up to 10 hours on 3G, Up to 10 hours on LTE, Up to 11 hours on Wi-Fi
- HD Video playback: Up to 11 hours
- Audio playback: Up to 50 hours
- Standby time: Up to 10 days

iPhone 6 Plus:
- 2915 mAh battery capacity
- Talk time: Up to 24 hours on 3G
- Internet use: Up to 12 hours on 3G, up to 12 hours on LTE, up to 12 hours on Wi-Fi
- HD video playback: Up to 14 hours
- Audio playback: Up to 80 hours
- Standby time: Up to 16 days

iPhone 6s Plus:

- 2750 mAh battery capacity (based on photo sent by Apple.Club.TW)
- Talk time: Up to 24 hours on 3G
- Internet use: Up to 12 hours on 3G, up to 12 hours on LTE, up to 12 hours on Wi-Fi
- HD video playback: Up to 14 hours
- Audio playback: Up to 80 hours
- Standby time: Up to 16 days

How is it possible that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has the same battery life as its predecessors? The A9 processor in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus likely has better power efficiency than the A8 processor in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. And iOS 9 has many under-the-hood optimizations, including the Low Power Mode for an increase in battery life.

What are your thoughts about the lower battery capacity in the iPhone 6s Plus? Please leave a comment!
